Show Notes:

-Induction = Having procedures and medications to go into labor.

-Inductions can happen if there is a medical reason or if the patient elects to do it at 39 weeks 0 days.

-Communicate ahead of time with your MD regarding what induction means, how it can occur and the steps that would occur. Make sure you know what to expect based on multiple scenarios.

-Here are some aspects that can get labor started:

Membrane Sweep (not an induction technique)

Dilapan- dilator

Balloon Mechanical dilator

Breaking the bag of water

Cytotec-tablet inserted vaginally or orally

Cervidil-tablet inserted vaginally

Pitocin-IV medication

-There are 2 stages of induction

  1. Cervical ripening

  2. Stimulating Contractions

-0-4cm = early labor, can be 12 hours or longer

-4-6cm on = you are considered to be in active labor, stages move faster
